Spurs made the right thing to extend Dejounte Murray

The 2016 draftee is scheduled to extend their rookie contract this season. The two of them were Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl. The news today that the Spurs signed the point guard to an extension for four years worth 64 million. It’s the right move for San Antonio’s front office as the kid from Seattle worth every penny. He was the replacement of the legend Tony Parker who win the title with the team on his 17 seasons. The two had similarities in terms of offense back on their first years in the league.

Murray sat out for all year last season after he tore his ACL in a preseason game. Supposedly it was his breakout season like to his fellow 2016 alumni Paskal Siakam who help the Raptors to win. In his preseason games this time he played limited minutes which he showed that he’s ready for the coming season.

With the news today in the NBA, there is four 2016 draftee who extended their contract also. Jaylen Brown had 4 years 115 million for the Celtics, Domantas Sabonis had 79 million in four years with the Indiana Pacers. Buddy Hield had 94 million with four years also wearing the King’s uniform and Tareaun Prince had 29 million in two years for the Nets. These guys were drafted in top twelve that year but only Jaylen Brown stayed on the team that drafted him the three was traded.

With the named mentioned above, Dejounte Murray had an All Talent recognized by the league. In the long term, it looks like their current contract will be a huge loss to the flexibility of the team. If they don’t help their team to have a good run in the playoffs the contract will be hard to move especially Jaylen Brown. While the Spurs had good timing for this situation to locked Dejounte for four more years. DJ is on the right team who can give him the best shot for his career. He is a hard-working guy who wants to win which the team committed to be the best in business.

If not for the injury last season, DJ could demand more money. So can we say it was a blessing in disguise? What the best here is they had some flexibility with other guys. They had Jakob Poeltl need to extend this year also that very important to the team. With DeMar DeRozan’s contract on the line, this season brings a little messy on cap space management situations. Derrick White needs to be lock also next season before he enters to be a restricted free agency in 2021. Of course, Bryn Forbes will be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

The Spurs just did the best thing for their franchise before the season started. A guy who committed to play for San Antonio even they are on little rebuild. Dejounte Murray is a leader that the Spurs want, his character fit with San Antonio’s culture.
