Without DeRozan, the Spurs can save a lot of money and points

The future of DeMar DeRozan in Spurs uniform is uncertain with the looming player option once free agency starts. Maybe he played his last game in the Silver and Black if the season totally canceled. The Spurs is 27-36, the worst they had in the last 23 years. Speculations start that he will likely decline his player option, with one of the weakest markets in free agency DeRozan will take advantage to take a huge contract.

Without DeRozan, the Spurs will need another scorer and a playmaker which DeMar’s role in San Antonio. But that hole will likely open the opportunity to others. With Lonnie Walker IV and Keldon Johnson are there to take the minutes. Dejounte Murray to get more responsibility as he becomes the primary ball-handler. Without DeRozan, Murray improved as a scorer as he set his career-high 25 points against the Utah Jazz. The burden on the defense will improve as DeRozan is one of the worst. He’s been outplayed in a forward position. DeRozan is one of the reasons why the Spurs is at the bottom of the league defensively.

Lonnie Walker IV needs to starts at shooting guard occupied by DeRozan and Forbes. The second-year guard had a good impact on the team even he struggled offensively with his top-notch defense. With the ceiling to be an All-Star, Walker needs to earn his minutes next season. Same with Keldon Johnson he did his part in few games before the suspension. Other than scoring, he never doubts himself defending Luka Doncic. With DeRozan on the roster, these two guys will get limited minutes.

The roster of the Spurs from Murray, White, Walker, Jakob, and Keldon can switch and defend well. Scoring in this league is good but saving a lot of points is much appreciated.

Without DeMar DeRozan, a lot of money in the table can be saved. They can chase a big free agent in 2021 like Giannis Antetoukoumnpo as one of the jackpot. The Spurs also had money to retain their upcoming free agents like Jakob Poeltl, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker IV.
