Will the Spurs pull a George Hill trade again?

The Spurs had a good asset with their current roster who can put them on the next level. They had a lot of young with potential guys who can compete. The team signed Dejounte Murray and locked in for the next four years with 62 million in the table. In the middle of the first rounds, they find a talent like Derrick White, Lonnie Walker, and Keldon Johnson.

In 2011, after getting the top seed the Spurs abused by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of NBA playoffs in six games. The opportunity to win the title is closing with Tim Duncan already 35, Ginobili isn’t getting healthy and Tony Parker can’t carry alone the team. They need help in the frontcourt as only Duncan, Matt Bonner and inexperienced Tiago Splitter as their big. Richard Jefferson becomes a bust. The franchise got a young and proven role player with George Hill, the hero of 2010 playoffs run that they upset the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.

In the 2011 draft night, the Spurs offered him to Indiana Pacers 15th pick and the rest is history.

The team needs a star power or a good talent in the draft that can put them as a contender. But who could be the guy that they can offer to a team? Derrick White could be the closest guy that the Spurs can give up. This kid drafted by San Antonio in 2017 and two years later playing the best game of his career. Gregg Popovich continued to trust him by giving a spot in the Team USA that sent to China for a World Cup competition. White yet to perform this season as we expected from him if we based on his performance against the Denver Nuggets. Derrick White is a good asset who can help any team. He can score with his own into the next level and can stop the man on his front. With only 26, he can start with other teams, a much cheaper upgrade. The team’s who look for a point guard likely to get him.

For San Antonio, they can save financially as they need to extend Derrick White next season. Colorado native can earn up to 8 digits if an extension will be on the table. With already Murray locked in and Patty Mills is in the last year of his contract next season. The Spurs are likely to sign the veteran into a cheaper one.

White value could earn like a first-round pick that they can use to a mini rebuild. They can’t get a top 10 pick for him but with the Spurs proven capacity, it’s worth the risk they can do. This year prospect isn’t depth according to some experts but there’s always a gem in the middle.

The coaching staff can fill the void that Derrick White occupied. There’s a lot of guard in the market the Spurs can make a backup. With Popovich yet to figure out how White to play with Murray together. Jakob Poeltl also a good trade asset but the team got no legitimate big man.
