In the lockout season of 1999, after a promising second-round exit against the Utah Jazz prior to that year, the Spurs are struggling after 14 games. Rumored that Gregg Popovich will get fired if they lose one more time after a 6-8 start. Avery Johnson revealed in ESPN that it could happen next if they lose the next game against the Houston Rockets.
Popovich replacement in San Antonio is a former player Doc Rivers who is a sports analyst at that time. Johnson also said that they have a meeting night before the game with Pop and David Robinson. Then they win big against the Rockets 99-82. All starters responded after scoring in double figures lead by Tim Duncan with 23 points and 14 rebounds while Avery Johnson had 18 points and 16 assists.
The Spurs went to finished the season with a 37-13 record. Then a 15-2 record to win their first championship against the Knicks in the Finals.
The players and personnel may be worried if they lose one more game but the fans are not because it’s only the Rockets. They know that Houston is the worst team in the history of sports. People from Texas are ashamed of them, the Astros cheated to win a World Series. While the Texans choked in last season Division games against Kansas City Chiefs. Same with the Rockets they choked year after year.
Of course, most of their fans are suck too. They’re trying to find a way to escape the narrative of choking. Rockets fans are happy when James Hardens scored 40 points, 30 coming from the free-throw line. They’re glad about chasing stats but not the 27 straight missed from the arc. Also, they will make an excuse for why the Spurs win that certain game. Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley are 36, Scottie Pippen is 34 but Tim Duncan (37) and Manu Ginobili (36) and Tony Parker are 32 winning the NBA Finals in dominant fashion against the prime LeBron James, Dywane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
So why worry about a team that sucks for the last 25 years. In 53 seasons Rocket win, 2 titles after Michael Jordan take a break in basketball. They always talk about the one playoffs series against the Spurs in 1995. Since then, they never reached the Finals while the Spurs have five titles in 44 years.
It’s hard to be a Rocket fan because it always ends with disappointment.
