With the 2019-20 NBA season concluded its time to focus on the NBA Draft and the coming offseason. Of course, the Las Vegas betting odds released their forecast if who will be the NBA champion in 2021. One of the casinos put the San Antonio Spurs as 320/1 to win it, equivalent to only 26th best in the league. Well, it’s expected after the Spurs missed the postseason for the first time in 23 years. The 11th pick isn’t good enough to put them on top again as fast as we want. That guy needs to work a lot for the Spurs future.
The impending free agency of DeMar DeRozan with a player option is still in question. DeRozan is the Spurs leading scorer and playmaker which makes his guys better around him, unfortunately, they failed to register it in a win. If he’s going to opt-out and sign elsewhere without a significant return, it will be a huge hole for the Spurs. DeRozan’s buddy LaMarcus Aldridge is already 35 and injury tearing down his body. Expected a down year for him together with his production.
The Derrick White bubble game was impressive with Keldon Johnson but it could be enough to win 50% of their game next season? Dejounte Murray needs to be a consistent contributor offensively to help the scoring load while Lonnie Walker needs more minutes to add his own. These young Spurs are good but the team in the Western Conference is getting healthy and better.
The Golden State Warriors are likely coming back with a healthy Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Then Draymond Green expected to get back his team contribution which an awful last year with that triple single. The impact of the number 2 pick is undeniably fantastic. This Warriors team is highly motivated after the Lakers championship run. The team is likely to make a huge run that they owned the West with the Splash Brothers.
The last year eight seed Portland Trail Blazers will play with all their guys also. With a healthy Jusuf Nurkic and Zach Collins, it could add firepower from the duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. The Denver Nuggets is still a lock to get the spot together with Los Angeles Clippers. While the Utah Jazz is going to be a top-five team with Donovan Mitchell coming back.
Although there’s a little chance for San Antonio with the eighth spot with injuries to Dallas Mavericks center Kristapz Porzingis. The decision making of the Houston Rockets on how to approach the future with James Harden and Russell Westbrook. If they still believe that a 6’5″ center PJ Tucker could make them a contender was such a crazy idea. Then Oklahoma City Thunder who’s the most achiever last season. The idea of Chris Paul to be trade bait to a contender could make them out of the playoff picture.
It’s too early to bet, but the movement in free agency and trades will be a factor. Once it will get started expects changes. If the Spurs will be aggressive to improve the current roster they can earn a spot. But if they will be satisfied enough expect for another postseason watching other teams.
