With less than a week to go for the trade, deadline teams are looking to upgrade or sell veterans with contract disposal. Executives in the league are watching Spurs if what they should do with DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. These two veterans are balling for the team but they still 2.5 games behind playoffs. They are also 3.5 games losing record to secure a top ten pick.
The Spurs are 21-26, which puts them 2.5 games back from the playoffs and only 3.5 games from top-10 lottery odds. League executives wonder if they’ll choose to break up their crowded roster. Older players like DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge are still effective but are blocking younger players from earning more minutes. Dejounte Murray isn’t available, but there are four other players I’d be targeting in trades.
Kevin O Connor recommended four Spurs should be traded to get the Spurs future better. First, the veteran Patty Mills who played for the team since 2012, also win in 2014. Mills has been a good scoring option off the bench for the Spurs. Provides leadership, locker room presence. The contender will likely throw a first-round pick for his services.
Derrick White which leads the second unit for San Antonio. A good two-way player who has a character of being a Spurs. He could evolve more in any team. If a contender should run after him, it could cost a good player and a pick. Derrick White is an excellent defender with a good showing in a playoff game. Investing in him to contend for this year’s run could return a good reward.
Lonnie Walker IV had an excellent game against the Houston Rockets were the Spurs win in double overtime. Decision making and consistent offense the reason why they played on limited minutes. Walker is a decent player who can have a good start with a rebuilding team.
Fourth is Jakob Poeltl that the Spurs will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Had a vital role with the Spurs off the bench. Underrated offensively but excellent on his defense. Provide those dirty works for the Spurs.
Verdict: The Spurs can get a good return with these guys but San Antonio will likely keep them. They are proven guys in limited minutes that can lead the franchise.
