The San Antonio Spurs had the longest-tenured coach in the league for more than 2 decades named Gregg Popovich. A lot of success within that span and even they’re on the rebuilding mode the Spurs still got a good youth movement. Spurs got multiple players that could help the team on contention in a couple of years. These kids aren’t a one-dimensional genius offensively but can play both ends of the court.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has a handful of assistant coaches who find a leading job with other teams. First, in 2013 Mike Budenhozer and Hubbie Brown find a job with the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers respectively. The most damage was done last season when Ettorre Messina and Ime Udoka gone. With the reports of Becky Hammon and Will Hardy got an interview audition with the New York Knicks, it means that these two can find a coaching job elsewhere someday. Becky Hammon had been in front of the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons executive job for the last two years. While Will Hardy is his first time to get an interview.
After his retirement three years ago, Tim Duncan was hired as an assistant coach for San Antonio. The joy for the people of the city and Spurs fans around the world is well known to many. They’re excited about what if he becomes the next head coach of their beloved team. With Popovich age at 71, maybe he got a few years away from his retirement. Especially with the way he’s running the team with a bad season in danger to miss the playoffs. Gregg Popovich’s contract will be over after this year and his plan to yet to reveal. With Hammon or Hardy likely to get a job elsewhere, Tim Duncan’s name is a perfect choice.
Popovich already put Duncan to be his deputy when he ejected in a game. Duncan also takeover when Pop is out. In a game against Charlotte Hornets, Duncan made a great rotation that gives the team a win. Even Becky Hammon is a much-proven coach in years Pop entrusts Duncan the responsibility twice. That game gives the opportunity to a guy like Keldon Johnson who deserves to be on the court.
The Spurs yet to find their identity after Duncan retired. They have a bunch of good players to rebuild. A couple of years could help the team make better.
Just right for the San Antonio Spurs to start another franchise with Duncan. A man who put San Antonio on the map of basketball. The organization has been the beneficiary of Duncan’s intelligence. If Popovich called it a career, Duncan will gladly accept the responsibility. In a small sample that he showed as a coach, he’s nothing but a perfect one.
