The Spurs found another gem just on his second season, as he takeover the point guard position after injury to Dejounte Murray. Derrick White played spectacular in playoffs which he scored his career high in Game Three of NBA Playoffs. With that unpopular dunk in Game One over Paul Millsap and a steal over Jamal Murray to seal a victory.
In his 26 minutes playing, he averaged 10 points 4 assists, 4 boards and 1 steal shooting 34% from the three. Spurs was 1 point better per 100 possession when White is on the court. He is the Spurs best perimeter defender. After Game Three that he is on fire, a little disappearance on his game when the Nuggets adjusted the defensive assignments.
The First thing he needs to improve is being healthy, he missed the opening of the season with an injury. When he’s back he was struggling with his role. Imagine those 15 games when 70% of it he was healthy. Spurs can win those games and can get a higher seed instead wishing who will face in the playoffs without home court advantage. It was huge, you know what I mean. If the referee heard Pop in Game Two no technical foul will be called then it can change the result of the game. No Game Seven right, which Aldridge didn’t hear him to foul.
Shooting and Aggressiveness, in Game Seven where game on the line White lost confidence on the driving the lane which he is doing in the first four games. He put points by dominating Murray with his skills and height advantage. White was to passive shooting the long two, he didn’t figure out how to scored against Gary Harris.
As per Pop, every game a learning process for Derrick White. The exposure he get this year and the confident that he is belong to the league will make him better every game. With the return of Dejounte, the burden on defense will be lessen, he can focus on setting plays for his teammates.
A 36 point performance wasn’t once in lifetime, he keep working hard to achieve the greatest reward. White will be a piece of the franchise to achieve a greater goal.
