The San Antonio Spurs is a model of success by finding great talent from the draft. Even it’s in the second round or late first-round pick they usually do better compared to others. From overseas like Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili will likely a Hall of Famer once they qualified. They even pick such great role players like George Hill at 26th in 2009. With that selection process Spurs become competitive for the last two decades.
Lately, Spurs picks college players in the NBA draft that has the potential to be an All-Star in the league someday. Even they got from the middle or late first-round picks, experts always labeled them that they’re the next big star.
The man who behind the picks like Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV, Keldon Johnson, Chemizie Metu and Quin Weatherspoon is former Knicks/Raptors forward Landry Fields. He was hired by the Spurs in 2016, after a forced retirement due to injury. The Spurs draftee Derrick White, which unknown to others is now already a proven talent who shined last year’s postseason after scoring 36 points in game 3 of round one. Derrick White a member of USA Men’s basketball that went to China last summer is an asset for San Antonio. Also, Lonnie Walker IV who is now playing good minutes with the Spurs is part of Fields scouting report. For sure, the Spurs will rely on him heavily next season once he gets the starting spot or more minutes. The last one Landry Fields project is an almost ready rookie Keldon Johnson who playing well after Tim Duncan gives him a breakout minutes against the Charlton Hornets.
The Spurs quietly prepared a good one after the Tim Duncan era. They know that they need the readiest talent once the big three is gone so they turned into a college basketball program rather than a draft and stash in Europe. The Spurs front office once again steal another brain from the league. Landry Fields is a proven winner after the Knicks drafted him 39th overall in 2010. A rookie of the month awardee in November and December in 2010. Also a First-team All-Rookie team.
Fields now promoted by the Spurs to be the General Manager of the Austin Spurs. His hardwork being a college scout will be recognized once these kids show in big moments for San Antonio.
