Coming into Orlando without their last All-Star due to injury fades their hope to get a run to a playoff spot. Then, Trey Lyles had appendicitis which forces him to leave the team in the middle of the practice.
ESPN gives the Spurs only 5% to make the playoffs. Ahead of them are the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers and even the Sacramento Kings had a better chance than San Antonio. But the Spurs had momentum after beating the Kings and Grizzlies, they’re back at the 9th and 2 games behind of Memphis. While the Grizzlies, Pelicans, and Kings suffered two straight losses. Blazers on two-game losing skid after winning their first one and a tough schedule ahead.
The Spurs are very different, they played four guards as their starters and a center. On Spur’s first game, it was Derrick White and DeMar DeRozan then Dejounte Murray on the second one but veterans like DeRozan and Gay came clutch to help the Spurs win. Derrick White is still consistent scoring in double figures and bench still made a big impact. Lonnie Walker did his things to help the team scored 16 and 14.
“We need to play with pace. We don’t have one-on-one players,” coach Gregg Popovich said after a recent win. “We don’t give the ball to a player and say, ‘beat your guy and go score.’ That’s not the kind of players we have on the team. We’ve got to do it as a group. We’ve got to have movement and pace goes along with that.”
On defense, they keep on switching in the perimeter while Jakob Poeltl is protecting the rim. Offensively the team isn’t relying on DeRozan and the veteran let the young guys do it on their own while he’s become a playmaker. But in the dying second he takeover and Spurs win.
While the bench always becomes a reliable resource of help leading by Keldon Johnson. Popovich gave minutes to Quin Weatherspoon and the rookie responded in the first game. With Jakob Poeltl on foul trouble and fouled out himself, Pop put Drew Eubanks and he played big on his 23 minutes on the floor.
This is not the best Spurs yet but they’re fun to watch. They keep on improving while giving their chance to make history. Again the principle of “don’t bet against the Spurs” is something you need to think twice. Don’t count them out until they do.
