With a disappointing season despite the talent of the team, the Spur’s biggest concern is the center position. With the injury of LaMarcus Aldridge and Jakob Poeltl, they were dominated by opponents big man at Trey Lyles being the starting center. On their last three losing games, Pacers, Nets and the Cavaliers had big men who work in the paint. The last one against the Cavaliers, Spurs had a total of 44 team rebounds while the duo of Kevin Love and Andre Drummond had 35. Cleveland gets 62 whooping points from the paint.
The franchise needs to fix this long term. By resigning Jakob Poeltl is one of the first and best thing. This big man from Austria is already a proven commodity for San Antonio. His defense alone can make the Spurs better, with his underrated offensive skills. Plus he’s a lot cheaper than the other big that will exist in the market. With LaMarcus Aldridge is on the last year of his contract, the reunion with the Portland Trail Blazers is likely. With the tearing down of his body, the Spurs need another big man.
One more thing is Chimezie Metu which balling in Austin Spurs needs some minutes. He recorded multiple double-doubles and he leading the charge for the Spurs. The Nigerian big man improves his every facet of the game as he works on his outside shooting from the arc. Even Drew Eubanks is enjoying his best career so far, Metu is the guy who’s a long-term project for the team.
Assuming the Spurs miss the playoffs and secured in the lottery they can pick a big man James Wiseman or Obi Toppin. Both had the potential talent to be future of the league. The former Memphis Tigers who played only three games in college is modeled his game into former Spurs big man David Robinson. In just three games, he’s been an unstoppable force in the paint with a good touch from midrange. Wiseman a great player defensively who used athleticism to alter or block shots.
While Dayton power forward Obi Toppin is such a great athletic freak. On the offensive side of basketball using his quickness and muscle in the paint to score. This guy is a post-up player with a quick first step. The Spur’s lack of contribution from the frontcourt on offense makes sense for the Spurs to pick Toppin.
The league is now all about space and pace as they believe the more shots you take is the better chance of winning. But the San Antonio Spurs not totally buying it. They still believed that a big man is still a big factor to start a franchise. That’s why the Spurs need to prioritize this move.
