Should the Spurs pursue Montrezl Harrell in free agency?

This coming offseason, the Spurs need to lock their cast by extending their contracts. One of the most priority is Derrick White, the Spurs one of the best players in the bubble game. He’s qualified to sign an extension as he’s a huge part of the team’s future. Derrick White is becoming the best two way player in the league quietly. Another one is Jakob Poeltl who will be a restricted free agent.

This offseason it’s limited in terms of talents at free agency. But one of the underrated free agents is the reigning Sixth Man of the year Montrezl Harrell of the Los Angeles Clippers. It was reported that after a disappointing finish in the playoffs Harrell and Paul George arguing at the locker room. The center will be a restricted free agent once free agency opens and everybody can bid. In 63 games this season, he averaged 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. It was an efficient effort on the offensive ends as e shoots 58% from the field. Beng undersized at 6’7″ Harrell is a beast who hard works in the boards, he also averages almost 3 offensive rebounds per game which give second chances points.

In San Antonio, they’re employing a small ball. With a lack of depth at the paint, they could try Montrezl Harrell. He’s a guy like Malik Rose for the early Spurs who can defend and score at his size. Although the offense output is very limited from the paint, the Spurs can maximize his potential. With Jakob Poeltl aren’t closing the opportunity from elsewhere Spurs could look for Harrell as a replacement. It could a good addition offensively without sacrificing on defense. Spurs will not hesitate to drive to the rim when they have Harrell. Somebody gonna fight for offensive boards if they miss. Guards can also make a late second pass with Montrezl Harrell waiting at the paint.

The big man also a long term investment for San Antonio Spurs. At 26, Montrezl Harrell has never been into a major injury and yet to miss a single game in the last two seasons. He’s also a guy who plays whatever role is given. A guy who’s not demanding but capable of everything. With the league switch often to the perimeter, the big man is still valuable. Just ask the Rockets! As LaMarcus Aldridge likely not to play longer in San Antonio, Harrell could be a huge part of the young guys that will lead the run.

The only hurdle is how much the Spurs will pay him? Without enough cap space if DeMar DeRozan opt-in, the Spurs will likely move some expiring contracts in order to sign Montrezl Harrell. But it’s very possible to move guys like LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, or even Patty Mills into a contender to sign the reigning Sixth Man of the Year.
