Derrick White is qualified for an extension this offseason. The Spurs began their negotiations to keep their underrated guard on the team. The front office offered Derrick White 4 year extension worth 60 million according to Legion Hoops.
Derrick White has been a reliable backup point guard all season long. He’s capable of starter which he did in the bubble game held in Orlando, Florida. White takes over the duty when Dejounte Murray gets injured after tearing his ACL in the preseason game. The guard been productive and help the Spurs to almost upsetting the second seed Denver Nuggets in the 2018 first rounds playoffs which went to seven games. Colorado native sealed the game one win with his clutch steal to Jamal Murray and exploded for 36 points in game three. It was the start of his confidence to make an impact in the Spurs uniform.
In the bubble, White becomes the second-best player behind DeMar DeRozan. Gregg Popovich entrusted him to be more aggressive, involve offensively with taking more attempts from the arc. The guard responded even they came up short and missed the playoffs for the first time in 23 years.
It makes sense for the Spurs to secured Derrick White for the next ten years. He’s been a good story for San Antonio as his character fits the city. He led the guard position in terms of blacks last season while third in drawing an offensive foul. The rumored 60 million they are offering could be a steal as the Spurs projected to have a 70 million cap space in the summer of 2021 which is enough to chase a superstar in free agency.
