Jabari Young of CNBC and former ExpressNews reporter had some talks around the league. One of their discussion is about Spurs veteran DeMar DeRozan who had a player option that will decide until October worth 27.7 million. As one of the agents mentioned to Jabari Young that DeMar DeRozan could package to the Miami Heat giving the facts with his closeness to Jimmy Butler. It’s obvious that Miami Heat is looking for another star to pair with Butler. As some reports last trade deadline that San Antonio Spurs informed DeRozan that he will not be traded. With some rumors that the Spurs are asking for too much for the exchange.
The Spurs are on a rebuilding stage right now as they missed the postseason for the first time in 23 years. The team went 5-3 in the bubble as they show Spurs can compete with their own small-ball version with DeRozan as a stretch four without shooting a three. The veteran responded well taking a backseat in the first 36 minutes of the game until he went to take over in the final quarter. Outside of his scoring prowess DeRozan improved as a help defender. The former All-Star also become a mentor to the young guys of the Spurs, with a huge leap on their game.
Realistically, the Spurs can secure him a maximum contract this offseason if DeRozan opts out. The team had a huge cap space next season with three expiring contracts of LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills are off the books.
