The report came from Ian Begley that the New York Knicks is in position well enough to acquire a star this offseason. With a new head coach, Tom Thibodeau the front office likely to make a sign and trade. Knicks is the longest team in the Eastern Conference to miss the playoffs for six consecutive years. Multiple times in the lottery, they got the eight pick for the upcoming draft in October.
Last offseason the Knicks also is well-positioned to acquire Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving after making a trade to clear cap space. But neither of them sign, as the two choose to come to Brooklyn Nets. Add to the insult, the franchise also misses the Zion Williamson lottery.
Last May, Knicks has been rumored to DeMar DeRozan. They’re interested in finding another talent that can help the franchise. Once the 11-year veteran opt-out his contract New York will aggressively pursue to bring his talent to the Big Apple. As the franchise desperate to make improvement every season it’s no brainer to take the best available talent on free agency.
On the other hand, the Spurs are fully embracing the youth movement. With his age at 31 with a limited ceiling on his game and likely to demand one last huge contact, the question is the Spurs willing to be with DeRozan in the next four or five years? DeRozan is the first Spurs to average 20/5/5 for back to back season. With him, they have a great run in the first round of playoff against the Denver Nuggets. This season he made the best individual performance but failed to score a win. It resulted in missing the postseason for the first time since 1997.
The Spurs quietly shopped him last trade deadline together with LaMarcus Aldridge. But everything went fall when Spurs asked for too extensively according to the Miami Heat.
Many believe that DeMar DeRozan can’t get over the hump, but the front office has different views about it.
My own verdict here is DeMar DeRozan will sign an extension for the Spurs for three years worth 80-85 million. He could be a huge help to the development of the young guys. They need to compete to make them better because the greatest test for everyone is playing in the postseason no matter how bad will be the outcome. With his personality and mutual respect for Gregg Popovich, the Spurs organization will trust him.
