The report came from Frank Isola that the New York Knicks gathering intel to make a trade for Chris Paul this summer. The Knicks is the only team in Eastern Conference having a long playoff drought for six years since Carmelo Anthony lead the team to second-round exit in 2014. This could be a good move for the short term as Pual turns 35 this May.
The team is struggling for a point guard position which Frank Nkitilina looks like a bust and Dennis Smith Jr is injury prone, while Elfrid Payton is just a backup. The franchise’s lack of leadership put them in a hole that hard for them how to get back on playoffs race. Some members of the organization feel Paul is that guy to help the young Knicks. Paul is perfectly suited for the Knicks as he’s leading the surprising sixth-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in Western Conference.
However With Chris Paul’s age, contract and trajectory of the team this move doesn’t make sense for the Knicks. They’re only willing to make a deal if they’re not going to give up picks. There are scenarios that they can absorb Cris Paul two year contract without giving anything. This is presumed that the Oklahoma City Thunder willing to give the veteran point guard without significant return.
The only way that makes good for Oklahoma City is the cap space that they can gain. Giannis Antetokoumnpo is one of the big names in free agency in 2021.
