Today the trade news that the Wolves send out starting point guard Jeff Teague and Treveon Graham to the Atlanta Hawks for Allen Crabbe. It looks bad for Minnesota aside from creating a roster spot who they’re targeting D’Angelo Russell. Even before the season starts rumored to be Karl Anthony Towns preferred teammate. This trade means they are trying to make some moves.
Enter the Spurs who can really make a pitch with the pieces they had. San Antonio can trade DeMarre Carroll and Bryn Forbes for Gorgui Dieng or Robert Covington and a second-round pick. Wolves can free cap space in the offseason with the expiring contract of Forbes. While they can trade DeMarre Carroll in any contending teams next season. A good win for them financially which free agent now bid for the most money they can get.
The benefit for the Spurs is they need a defensive guru who can help their perimeter. LaMarcus Aldridge’s defense is on the decline while Jakob Poeltl barely gets 20 minutes per game. Trading Bryn Forbes means Lonnie Walker IV minutes are on the rise. Good production on both ends of the court will improve. Walker potential can be witnessed this season than Pop scheduled for next year. Then with Demarre Carroll, the Spurs looks fool for not putting this guy on the court. They are waiting for talent, wins, and money for the next three years.
If the Spurs can get the big man Dieng it can help their frontline which is solely focused on Aldridge and Poeltl as a center. A guy who can really spread the floor which gives a clear lane for a slasher like DeRozan. Dieng attempted 3- three-point shot per game and made 37% of it. Scoring almost 10 points per game, 6 boards and an intimidating force in the paint. A much better scorer than Jakob Poeltl which the Spurs lack from a big man if Aldridge is out.
Then if they can get Robert Covington, the much better for San Antonio. First, he is a 3 and D playing at three originally. DeMar DeRozan can slide back into his position as a two-guard. His efficiency on this for the last nine years back in Toronto Raptors. Plus he will not get bullied defensively by forwards in the league. Spacing is the main reason for San Antonio why Bryn Forbes on the court but with Covington, the problem will be answered. Although his accuracy from the arc went down as he converts 36% he’s averaging 13 points per game and elite defensively.
A huge upgrade for San Antonio if they can pull this off.
