Losing Skid had a little concern but the Spurs are still fine

San Antonio Spurs on a six-game losing streak for the second time since 2011. That was one of the worst seasons for the team as they were upset by Memphis Grizzlies in the very first round for being a top seed. Spurs finish the season finale struggling with Manu Ginobili injured on the last game against the Phoenix Suns. That injury forces the team to miss him the game one and played with a broken elbow for the rest of the series.

While on this six-game losing skid the team lost mostly to a good team. There’s a concern on the team rotation which had some disadvantages on opponents’ favor. First, the veteran Marco Belenillie shooting 25% from the field, also one of the worst defender. Marco gave up offensive rebounds and the lack of defensive awareness makes him a liability on the court. Second, the team mostly started the game slowly. They were been down big right in the first 12 minutes of the game before making a little push in the middle of the game until they blow it up in the end. Because the team had a horrible defense, opponents can score over Bryn Forbes or Patty Mills. The inexperienced of Dejounte Murray and Derrick White made Pop to rely on these two smaller guards at the end of the game.

With these things mentioned, there’s always a way to fix the problem they had. The giving up of too many easy baskets from the start because the team had a bad perimeter defender outside of Dejounte Murray. It’s Bryn Forbes an undersized of his position and DeMar DeRozan which playing out of his position. Scoring guards take advantage of Forbes’s lack of physicality. Popovich can employ another premier defender either Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV or Demarre Carroll. This adjustment can help the team defensively.

One of the reasons why the Spurs losing a lead in the final quarter is the inconsistency offensively of the Spurs point guards. Namely Derrick White and Dejounte Murray. As the team relies on the playmaking of DeRozan which is not really his position the Spurs are struggling to find another scorer outside of him.

The team’s losing skid was close and anyone can win. The Spurs just did a big mistake for not playing in the final minutes. In nine of their losses, only two in double figures. The loss to Boston Celtics is the only one that never been close right from the start. The positive thing for the team who can make a run for anybody in this league.

The continue of refusal of Pop to extend minutes of Dejounte Murray and Derrick White. The two yet to play together big minutes down the stretch is one of the reasons they’re losing. Most of the Spurs losses came from a team with great scorer from the perimeter which the two guards are the only way to limit their production. Popovich still played them for an average of 22 minutes per game which is below the league average if we compare to the others of the same age. Murray is yet a perfect point guard but he is the only one bring the defensive tenacity. With the season goes long, the presence of the veterans LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan slowly getting to the right rhythm. This means the young should step up on their game on a consistent basis.
