Joshua Primo: A Bust or Future for the Spurs

The 2021 NBA Draft had many susprises and the Spurs surprised everybody by their own pick at 12. With a lot of prospects who’s available on what their needs and mock drafts believes that these guys are the best player, San Antonio selected the unknown kid from Alabama, a freshman Joshua Primo. The youngest in the current NBA Draft at age 18 which will turn 19 this coming december. Big names like Kai Jones, Jalen Johnson, Keon Johnson and Moses Moody was available and Joshua Primo was expected to be in the second round. Spurs fans had no idea about this Canadian kid until the Spurs top him. Let us know more about this kid on why the Spurs believe in him to help the franchise.

The Kid Strength

San Antonio Spurs need to improve shooting, Joshua Primo is among the best in the draft at shooting three. On his lone year season in college, he shoots 38% as he converted 44% on a catch and shoot, 40% at contested shot, 48% on wide open three and he can also shoot well off the bounce. In the current roster, only Devin Vassell can make a consistent shooting, Lonnie Walker IV can be the second best, the rest are average at best. Spurs general manager Brian Wright said that the Spurs needs was answer by drafting a wing who can shoots and a lot of versatility. Primo who can also make shot from deep by finding ways to get open for himself. Got a quick release over his defenders was a good thing when somebody is guarding him. Joshua Primo was very effecient on attacking basketball off the dribble, a decent player on the offensive end in the half court. A player who can be great in the open court. Also been very good finding buckets by cutting to the basketball.

About his defensive upside, Primo can stay in front of his man and makes harder for them to score. He uses his length to bother his opponents even his step behind. Primo is standing at 6 feet 6 inches tall who can battle phisicality in the paint even big opponents trying to find a mismatch against him on a switch.

The weakness

With his age his experience is still raw, there’s a lot of areas Primo needs to improve. The finishing around the rim needs to be consistent. With his inability to create a shot with his left hand, Joshua Primo force to make a shot always with his right hand. Primo still raw when attacking the paint as he avoids the contact thru the rim. He’s also not a good passer as he had more turnovers than assists. Joshua Primo had a lot of inconsistencies in his shooting. Primo dont have a first step that can blow past his man, even in switches against the big man. This young kid force himself to take more long jumper from the isolation.

The verdict

Joshua Primo is still a kid who needs more experience to get better. For sure the San Antonio Spurs will send him to G League with the Austin Spurs. He will develop his skills there against some former NBA player, undrafted and other rookies. It was a proven process for the franchise. Joshua Primo likely to get his minutes consistently in two years or three. When that time will come he’s going to be a good compliment to a slasher like Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker IV who loves to makes great play to others. His defensive upside was a good thing for the team that can help lock up the perimeter.
