Jakob Poeltl has a huge responsibility for the Spurs next eight games

The NBA will resume on July 30 in Disneyland at Orlando, Florida composed of 22 teams. Six of them are bubble teams that will compete for the eighth spot in both conferences. Spurs are one of these teams that trying to make for the 23rd time run in the postseason.

With LaMarcus Aldridge reports that he’s out for the season because of an injury, the Spurs will rely on Jakob Poeltl heavily. The team has no enough depth in terms of a big man. Jakob Poeltl has completely healed thanks to the suspension last March. He got eight more games to help the Spurs campaign.

This season, the big man from Austria contributing 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists with less than 20 minutes per game. His best game so far is against the Houston Rockets. Poeltl played for 41 minutes, scored 6 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished 5 assists, and got five blocks which two of it are a game-saving play against James Harden. Since New Year, Jakob Poeltl only played 20 minutes once. His role is being diminished as Gregg Popovich relied too much on Trey Lyles and Rudy Gay to occupied the four positions which force LaMarcus Aldridge to play being a center.

Jakob Poeltl is a pure center in his position with great intelligence on the court. In offense, his ceiling is limited as he doesn’t really take a shot outside of the paint. With the skills to get offensive rebounds, he gave his team second chances. Jakob Poeltl is a good screen setter which he also perfects the pick in roll play. Offensively the coaching staff yet to give a responsibility that he can’t do. He didn’t force himself for a low percentage shot. One of the good things about him is how underrated his passing ability which very unique from a big man. Poeltl also knows where to receive a pass so he can easily put the ball in the bucket. At only 24 years old, he also runs to complete the transition offense. The Spurs big man is a quiet guy defensively while anchoring the paint. With quick feet to recover or help his teammates on defense. He also knows when to block shots to save points.

With an offseason coming, being a free agent in which the Spurs can match any offer to resign Jakob Poeltl. The final eight games could be a decision making for the Spurs front office if how Poeltl could be fitted with the team. How does he respond from a challenge without LaMarcus Aldridge? The fourth-year big man from Utah will have a matchup against the best bigs in the Western Conference. It’s a small sample but could be a great start for a long term relationship. With Aldridge sentiments earlier that he wants to get back in Portland. Jakob is only 24 with a lot of basketball to play with and he’s certainly that man.
