The Golden State Warriors represented the Western Conference in the NBA Finals for the last five years. They win three of them all against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. With injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, the Warriors is the first team to get eliminated in the playoff race last February. The odds of getting the top pick is in their favor.
On the other hand, San Antonio Spurs likely to miss the playoffs after LaMarcus Aldridge is done for the season. A top ten pick could be a reward for the worst season. For the first time since Tim Duncan, they can pick a top tier talent to help their young squad.
So how the Golden State Warriors can help the Spurs here? As pundits always said that this draft isn’t the deepest in terms of talent. While the Warriors are contenders they had to consider everything if they’ll keep their pick or trade. The Spurs according to Popovich are willing to be a partner of every team except for either Lakers or Clippers. With Steve Kerr, a Gregg Popovich protege will be a favor for both teams to make a deal. This is the truth in every team that they need a partner to make them better.
So how’s the deal looks like?
Warriors receive: Spurs 2020 first-round pick; 2021 first-round pick; Rudy Gay
Spurs receive: Warriors 2020 first-round pick; Jordan Poole
With the trade exception in Andre Iguodala deal, Warriors can acquire Rudy Gay without adding another luxury tax. The veteran is on the last year of his contract that could be a good addition off the bench for the Golden State Warriors. The former champion having a salary cap problem in the coming future. Likely, Andrew Wiggins will be traded to give flexibility to the team. It’s hard for them to complete a 15 man roster without cap space. Rudy Gay has the worst numbers of his career this season but he’s still an effective fourth or fifth option in scoring. He’s a proven performer in the last year of game seven of the first round against the Denver Nuggets. There are multiple times that he played center and the Spurs finds success. Which he can be a poor version of Harrison Barnes.
For San Antonio, this is the right time for them to pick a franchise player. With a few talents like James Wiseman, Anthony Edwards, Obi Toppin, and Deni Advija are among the top candidates that will land to the top five. One of them can be a franchise changer that could help the Spurs back quickly into contention. They have a solid squad from Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker, and Keldon Johnson. Another talented added go them could make a good run. The Western Conference is improving year every year if the Spurs not going to make a move the only ceiling they can is the top seven seed. These talents are still raw but with the Spurs perfect development program, they’re going in the right direction.
Giving up on Rudy Gay could help the Spurs to extend Jakob Poeltl which will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Either they can sign a much better role player in the market. DeRozan likely wants to get paid Spurs to need every single dollar. Without Gay, they can give some minutes to Keldon Johnson and Luka Samanic off the bench. These two are among Spurs talented pick last season despite having limited times in the big league.
