Gregg Popovich: We’re more focus on the development

This season the Spurs are struggling with a 27-36 record. Without the veteran big man LaMarcus Aldridge with an injury, the team will try their chances in Orlando. Spurs also lost Trey Lyles after having appendicitis.

Being the youngest Spurs teams with an average of 26.3 years old since 1996, Gregg Popovich is looking for the team’s development.

” We’re going to play eight games and try our chances. We don’t have LaMarcus Aldridge and recently Trey Lyles. If we make the playoffs it will be great, but my main focus is development.”

The Spurs have eight players with 25 years old and below, three of them are rookies. Derrick White who only 26 years old just played 24 minutes per game, together with Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl. Keldon Johnson in nine games had only 10 minutes and Luka Samanic had 12 minutes in one game.

Among rookies, Johnson is showing his worth in limited minutes. While the second-year player Lonnie Walker only got 14 minutes. He’s always been great when on the court showing his great athleticism and good basketball IQ.

You can’t compare Derrick White to a guy who plays 35 minutes. You’re not seeing the best of Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker, Bryn Forbes, or Keldon Johnson,” Murray said. “I can go on and on, Jakob Poeltl, you’re not seeing the best of them because we’re still earning our stripes behind closed doors.”

Without two of the starting five, with every game counts and could use for a future success these younger players will likely get extended minutes.

I’m not too concerned with trying to figure out how to match up with the Lakers or Clippers or Celtics or Raptors or Rockets or Nuggets or anybody else,” Pop said. “I think each team has a goal here. Some teams are a step away from winning an NBA championship. Other teams just want to be in the playoffs. Some teams are more concerned with development.”

Gregg Popovich is one of the big motivators whoen it comes to development. From Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and George Hill are among others that been part of Spurs’ success in years.
