Gregg Popovich outsmarted by his student on his own game

In a game between a master and his desciple, it’s clearly the master had his advantage. Which really shows that the Spurs leading the most part of the game. An excellent performance from DeMar DeRozan and outstanding job of Jakob Poeltl who replaced LaMarcus Aldridge due to injury. Spurs again leading the fourth quarter in a double-digit until the Chicago Bulls made their own run. The Bulls are leading with 101-96 when Spurs made their own 7-0 run. Which the Bulls decided to hack Jakob Poeltl sending him to the line which he missed 3 straight.

Jim Boylen the Bulls coach who’s the former assistant of Gregg Popovich in 2014 outsmarts him. The hacking of the poorest free throw shooter was used by Pop in years. But now it was using against him and it paid off. WIth that foul the offensive attack of Spurs went cold, the momentum disappeared. Without the misses of the free throws, Poeltl is excellent with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. He’s been a big problem for the Bulls scorer all game. His presence on the rim felt bad.

Gregg Popovich’s young guns had a limited contribution all night. Dejounte Murray had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists in 22 minutes. Derrick White had 2 points, 2 rebounds without a single point. Only Lonnie Walker IV had a good game but limited in minutes with only 14. Unlike the Bulls had a balance rotation lead by Zach Lavine with his 23 points. Denzel Valentine and Coby White had 16 and 11 off the bench respectively.

Popovich still giving a lot of minutes to Bryn Forbes even his shot isn’t falling. This is the Spurs three-game losing skid after made a three-game winning steak after a win against the New Orleans Pelicans. Spurs fall to 20-26 still a ninth place in the West. They are two games behind the surprising Memphis Grizzlies.

DeMar DeRozan had 36 and 10 but failed to convert another free throw to force overtime. If the Spurs want to qualify for a playoff run they need to level up their game. The young players need to be consistent offensively to help DeRozan on scoring. Gregg Popovich needs to be careful about his rotation on who’s going to get the most minutes and give the team the best chance to win.
