Giannis to Spurs: Crazy idea but could lead to reality

Before we make fun and react to “this thing not gonna happen” remember that Spurs aren’t favored to win the lottery in 1997. The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia Sixers had the best odds to get the top pick until the ping pong ball show up that Spurs will pick first. In 2000, when the offseason began the Orlando Magic almost make a done deal to sign Tim Duncan in free agency until he changes his mind in the very last second.

Again, how could the Spurs acquire Giannis Antetokoumnpo on his prime sign with the Spurs who failed to sign a marquee free agent since LaMarcus Aldridge in 2015? San Antonio failed to work out with Marcus Morris Sr and DeMarre Carroll last summer. The franchise just manages to sign past prime Pau Gasol and Rudy Gay. Big-time free agents don’t bother themselves to schedule a meeting with the Spurs once free agency began. Spurs aren’t a place to spend at your prime.

After the Milwaukee Bucks fall to Miami Heat in game two and down 2-0 the rumor of leaving the Bucks starts from everywhere. If the franchise will end with another disappointing exit, it could lead to some changes a highly possible could be on the coaching staff. Mike Bundenholzer likely on his way out if the front office became desperate. A looming free agency status of Giannis Antetokoumnpo in 2021 is something one of the biggest prize of the offseason. A lot of teams have been rumored that makes some interest with the MVP. From the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Toronto Raptors that can really make a run. Warriors have been in talks but they don’t have a salary cap. Toronto will sacrifice veterans just to sign the reigning MVP. While the Miami Heat can’t make an offer unless they sacrifice their young talent like Bam Abedayo

Here’s the idea of how the Spurs can make a run with Giannis Antetokoumnpo. Every team chasing for a superstar should have flexibility financially. The Spurs have massive cap space in the 2021 offseason. According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Spurs can have as much as 70 million cap space next year after they extended Derrick White. If we presumed the Spurs will also sign Jakob Poeltl and including rookies contracts the Spurs have still 50 million cap space. Being an unrestricted free agent, they can really pay Antetokoumnpo the money he wants. With four contracts are off the books next season, the Spurs chances are highly recommendable.

As we said some free agents signing need connection, LaMarcus Aldridge back in 2015 had Ime Udoka. An attractive one to Giannis when a former friend or somebody to also make a try to convince him. Enter Mike Budenholzer, the Spurs love to hire former employees to when they got fire. From PJ Carlesimo, Monty Wiilans, Jaque Vaughn, and James Borrego they back in San Antonio when somebody fired me. Bud could lead help us deal and convince Giannis Antetokoumnpo to sign with the Spurs. The Spurs had a great young squad who had a better roster in the future than the Milwaukee Bucks.

The reigning MVP had characters like the Spurs culture define. He doesn’t like to play or practice games against some other guy.

Gregg Popovich is still the best in this business as a coach. A far from reality idea but it could give the Spurs chances. A great chance. But if the Spurs had the moment trying to convince the Greek Freak takes his talent in San Antonio it could be another glory days with the great young squad.
