For the first time in many years the San Antonio Spurs has a money to spend this coming free agency. They had multiple free agent of their own, three of them was in the rotation that has a huge amount of playing time. DeMar DeRozan likely to be gone this time around, he has many time that has interest in acquiring him this season Los Angeles is one of the team who is eyeing to sign him, They also shown interest on Rudy Gay, while the Boston Celtics has been targeting Patty Mills. The Spurs had the youngest team in the league right now after drafting Joshua Primo and Joe Wieskamp in the recent NBA Draft. The team had an averaged age of 22 with Derrick White being the oldest at 27. With 48 million to spend the front office will look for the best possible option to keep the team ready for this upcoming season, after missing two straight season in the playoffs the team are building on Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson and Lonnie Walker IV.
As the free agency yet to start, there are rumors that the Spurs are looking for some bigman in the market. With the need to make the frontcourt more deeper, the free agency will be the answer. Let’s look who will be the realistic free agent target for the Spurs.
Lauri Markkanen, Power Forward
The fourth year player out of Finland has some down side with the arrival of Nikola Vucevic in the Chicago Bulls. His minutes was reduce. There’s a lot of team who is interested with Lauri Markkanen, he’s young at 24 with a lot of time to improve on his weaknesses. In San Antonio he can be a scoring threat anywhere on the court. a 40% three point shooter, 48% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. The Spurs rank bottom in shooting three, this guy from Finland can help the team as he’s taking six three’s per game. A big man who fits with the likes of Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker and Derrick White. Lauri can be the Spurs power forward and let Keldon Johnson slide at three together with Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker. The big guy can help the spacing and let this Spurs guards beat their man one on one. The Spurs can’t compromise the paint defensively as they can still put Jakob Poetle with Lauri Markkanen. At 24, the Spurs can afford his price at the same time he’s on the same timeline with the Spurs average age now.
Kelly Oubre, Small Forward
The Spurs had shown interest with Oubre even though he is coming from the worst season of his career as he played only 55 out of 72 games this offseason. Kelly Oubre also misses the most important game for the Golden State Warriors in the playin in which they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies. He’s a stretch four who brings production on both ends off the court. This man can bring a lot to the San Antonio Spurs with his energy alone. it could improve defense if he plays for the Spurs. He doesn’t need to dominant the ball to be a productive player, Oubre can be a spot up shooter or can be use as a switch in the paint as he moves like a guard. The Spurs won’t blow to many open layups as he can stay on his man. On his seventh year career Kelly Oubre Jr had 18 playoffs games played, all in Washington with one series win. In his career year in Phoenix Suns, Kelly Oubre Jr scored in double figures 53 times in total of 56 games he played.
It was reported that the San Antonio Spurs had interest on Zach Collins who played all but nothing in the last season with the Portland TrailBlazers. In total of possible more than 100 games for the past two seasons, Collins played only 11 games. His last best season was back in 2018-19 season in which the Blazers reached the Western Conference Finals. He helped his team to beat the Denver Nuggets in seven games in the second round which the team relied on his defensive effort against Nikola Jokic. In game six against the Denver Nuggets, Zach Collins had 14 points, four rebounds, and five blocks to help the Portland force a game seven, then he also had seven points, 5 boards and 4 blocks in game seven in which the Blazers wins the series. If the San Antonio gets him, he could add depth in center position which occupied by Jakob Poeltl and Drew Eubanks. Zach Collins addition will be underrated, in which the Spurs will be a big winner once he gets healthy. He could also add shooting as stretch big 32% from the arc. He’s very athletic who could average in double-doubles if he gets his minutes. The good things he’s only 23 with a lot of time to heal. A perfect fit to the second unit, while being very cheap for any team so far in which Bobby Marks of the ESPN projected Zach Collins to get paid around 2-4 million per year.
Doug Mcdermott, Small Forward
The Spurs doesn’t have a regular small forward after Devin Vassell or DeMar DeRozan. With the issue of poor shooting, Doug McDermott can bring fire power in the teams perimeter and three point line shooting. When Rudy Gay likely leaving, he could fill that off the bench role. Depends on the match up he can play big minutes down the wire while putting Keldon Johnson on the floor as the big power forward. McDermott is a shooter who’s very productive on the offensive end while having a career year in Indiana.
