In a recent article, Dynasties in the Making there are teams who are ahead of the Spurs. They preferred Memphis, Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, and New Orleans. These teams take a lot of hype who put numbers than winnings.
Let’s break down every reason why they are wrong about San Antonio.
New Orleans Pelicans
Huge boost after getting a lot of assets from Anthony Davis trade. Plus the most hype prospect Zion Williamson. Their roster who lead by Jrue Holiday, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball. These guys can put buckets but they don’t get healthy to win the game. Lonzo yet to play on his potential, Ingram had never a healthy full season. With the current roster, only Holiday play vital minutes in playoffs. Zion yet to see if his body is fit to NBA. A 6’7″ tall who doesn’t have a jump shot who relies more on his athleticism.
Devin Booker can put 70 points in a game. From anywhere on the court he can score effectively. Only the problem is his defense. DeAndre Ayton is a good center who can make an outside shot. But they don’t have stability, they change coaches almost every season. The system to put success is yet to set up. The Suns gave up already their prospect earlier than we expected. We can call them busts like Josh Jackson and Dragan Bender.
Jaren Jackson Jr put a stellar number as a rookie. It seems like a good one to build a franchise around him. They picked Ja Morant as a point guard after trading Mike Conley Jr. But the two had headlines for injuries. They are not seen yet to play on the court together. The Grizzlies yet to find pieces to compete in the future.
Trae Young headlines as to be the next Stephen Curry. A talented scorer who extended his range four feet behind the arc. Plus they had Collins and Huerter who can put buckets also. They had also their rookies who can develop at a perfect time. But these guys don’t play defense who still need to contend. Bucket alone isn’t enough to win a game.
The addition of Kristaps Porzingis and rookie of the year sensation Luka Doncic. Unbelievable when they are healthy if how many wins they can put together. The Latvian unicorn did not play a full season on his career. Doncic put stats but in a losing team.
Most of the mentions above never win like the young of Spurs. Dejounte Murray who misses the entire 2019 season. Already had 17 playoffs game experience with seven starts. Murray had a double-double against Houston to close the series in Game Six. He had 11 points, 10 boards and 5 assists against Patrick Beverly and company.
Derrick White had his own run against the Nuggets. They put numbers when needed, playoffs matter. A lot of people perform in the regular season but flops in the playoffs. The Spurs duo doesn’t really put 20 or 30 points or triple-doubles. They just play to the system to make everyone better. This is an advantage for the Spurs before they reach their potential they had a lot of playoff battles. They still had Lonnie Walker IV who projected to have a breakout season. Promising rookies from Samanic, Johnson, and Weatherspoon.
