A few days ago, Christian Wood was live on his Instagram asking for help if what team he should sign this offseason. The big man is an unrestricted free agent that Pistons wants to keep him, the Knicks also rumored to run after him. Christian Wood is a 6’9″ center with a 7’3″ wingspan that has been ranked by ESPN as the third-best forward free agent this year. He’s having a career year after the injury to Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond was traded. The undrafted forward averages 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting 57% from the field at 21 minutes of playing time.
The Spurs need a big man to anchor the paint defensively. Although they had LaMarcus Aldridge he’s not a long-term need anymore due to his age and health especially his contract. ESPN NBA Bobby Marks stated that the Christian Wood market is around 9 million. While the Spurs don’t have enough cap space to sign Wood, they can only settle for this when they move somebody. The Spurs have a lot of guys which is easy to cut to give Christian Wood what he wants.
The former journeyman could find a new home this offseason. He’s a guy that doesn’t post up his man to score a bucket but he’s perfect on a pick and roll/pop. Wood has been terrific on the pick and pops behind the three which he made 39% of it. While he positioned himself to score in a roll effectively. Wood had a good handle for a big to put the ball on the rim with a good first step. He’s too quick for a big with his feet to beat his man defensively. On the defensive side of basketball Christian Wood still excel. He knows how to used his size and strength to disrupt every shot near the rim.
At the age of 24, Christian Wood is at the same age as Spurs young guys that will be the team’s future. They can have a great run in San Antonio if they become teammates. It will be an answer to the huge lack of depth in the frontcourt position. With the guidance of Gregg Popovich who loves to be a mentor, they will work for some to get improved daily. Jakob Poeltl was been excellent for the team but the Spurs need a guy who can do both ends.
