The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League getting more audience recently compared to the Philippine Basketball Association. The league that the boxing icon Manny Pacquiao founded to give chances to ex-pro and young basketball cager to salvage their career. Also, give them a source of income to provide for their family. Personally, I don’t really watch the game properly but this playoff of Bacoor and Basilan series in game three change my mind.
One of the best reason, that people are watching the games unlike the PBA is the result is full of suspense. The Bacoor who owned the crowd that they played in Bacoor Coliseum lost in a close do or die game 3. This one of a hell of a series which both teams won in each other court. Same with Manila and Makati which went to overtime in-game three that Makati rallied back in the fourth quarter.
The PBA games are almost anticipated who will win. Despite small teams like Rain or Shine, Alaska, and Phoenix are on top, they get beat in the playoffs by MVP teams or likely the San Miguel Corporation. In my recent memory, the San Miguel teams are the champion in the last two years. The San Miguel Beer defended their All Filipino Cup title in four years and maybe with the COVID19, JuneMar Fajardo the Beermen behemoth will be healthy and ready to battle once the game resume. Then do you think somebody will watch games that you’re just waiting for the final score? With the unfair trades, the fans are in doubt with the officiating.
The fans need excitement and thrill, this is what the MPBL bring to the people. Most of the playoff games went to the deciding game. The current Division Finals will be held two Game three before the suspension. All games are just one or two possessions result until the final buzzer sounds. In their very first season, the Batangas win the title. Last season, San Juan Knights win in Davao to capture the championship with the clutch shot by Clarito.
With the decent showing, MPBL slowly gets sponsors which means more viewers on TV. If they keep on doing this and fully committed to a fair game, the people will get serious watching the league. The MPBL can get a good timeslot on TV.
