The current tournament of FIBA World Cup the Gilas Pilipinas didn’t tally any win. They had the worst loss in a tournament with 32 teams. The team was composed of a better player in the paper. With the huge advantage of Andray Blatche as a naturalized player.
So what went wrong with this team? They had the MVP June Mar Fajardo, the best player in the Philippines. Wingman likes RR Pogoy, veteran Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, Paul Lee. They had depth in every position and looks like they can compete. They will fight for every possession as the country’s pride “puso”.
It seems all frustrations every possession they look lazy. The result was a huge defeat, the worst against Serbia a 59 point deficit. That’s not Philippine basketball not in our wildest dreams. We knew that Filipinos were the shortest but they had the talent to overcome that weakness.
In my recent memory, the franchise of Alaska Milk in 1998 send his players and coach to lead the national team. They sacrifice the second run to a grand slam that season. Alaska a champion of All Filipino and Commissioners Cup. They give up their best players of Johnny Abbarientos, Jojo Lastimosa, and Kenneth Duremdes the MVP. Also Tim Cone coach the Centennial Team.
The national team’s focus is to return the basketball supremacy in Asia. They prepared earlier even the Governor’s Cup is ongoing. With teams had two imports they finish last. They also competed in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan. Philippine won the gold medal in that tournament. They also had a tour in the USA to face some tough American teams.
The national team makes a good run in the Asian Games. They won five straight games until they lose to powerhouse China and Korea. But they managed to win a bronze medal, the highest they had since that time.
With proper time to prepare a team can make a better run. The Gilas Pilipinas was talented and a taller version compares to that squad. With naturalization was always an option, I don’t see any reason if they can’t have a good fight. Philippine basketball should sacrifice, teams in PBA should give the best player they had. Not before two weeks before the tournament. The longer period of time they train and compete together. The result is much better. The only question is, team owners are willing to do it?
