Two preseason games already in the book for San Antonio Spurs both of it was a lopsided loss. The games don’t count but there are some concerns they need to fix it. We had some observations about the game against Miami Heat.
Let’s breakdown the good and the bad of Spurs play.
DeMar DeRozan went back after missing the first game against Orlando Magic. He still helping his team as a secondary playmaker behind Dejounte Murray. The Spurs will rely on him heavily once the season started on offense. Popovich wants him to shoot threes but he didn’t make a single attempt. The good thing is he keeps on attacking the lane, pushing the ball in transition and dished out to teammates.
Dejounte Murray was a playmaker who also attacks the rim. He makes a bucket and draws a foul. Although he’s missing his outside shots the improvement is already there as he isn’t yet to miss a free throw in two games. The point guard is settling a momentum after a long lay off because of injury.
The team running most of the time after getting stops. Even LaMarcus Aldridge pushes himself to run. There are instances that he scored and give an assist in the fastbreak. It was a good idea if they had only one reliable shooter in the court. The DeRozan- Murray can produce an offense if they play faster.
The aggressiveness of the wings as they went 26 times to the free-throw line. With Murray and DeRozan had four each.
Gregg Popovich experiments on Dejounte Murray to defend the opposing best players’ works. He put him to Jimmy Butler that settles his points from a long shot. This adjustment is to keep DeRozan on the court to make his impact on the offense.
Derrick White yet to figure out his shooting as he just made one of his twelve attempts in two games. The Spurs will need his contributions consistently if they want to have a good run. The good thing is Derrick White had a slow start last year.
The team made only 13 attempts from three. Looks like they will continue to do what they did last year. The league rises in shooting three in this era. While the Spurs do not yet adapt to the current trend. They rely on a long jumper and in the paint.
The inconsistent minutes of the young blood. Popovich yet to impress the with the minutes of Lonnie Walker IV. The second-year out of Miami was projecting to have a good role this season. But Popovich wants to let this kid surely develop his game.
